🌴 Summer Travel Plans

It’s a perfect time of year to get out of your usual routine, and head to the mountains, to the beach, or explore a far off land.

Be careful of what you post online BEFORE and DURING your vacation!

You may be sharing with more people than you realize!

Travel the World!

Scammers are scanning your social media accounts, looking for any excuse to learn more about you. Telling them where you are going in advance invites all types of scams. They can call you impersonating your cruise line, tell you there is a problem and they need to run your credit card again.

They can also target your family members, calling to tell them you’ve been hospitalized, or arrested overseas, and looking to have them send money.

Take all the photos and save all the memories! Share them online only when you’ve returned home.

🔐 What is Multi-Factor Authentication?

It’s not a data breach or ransomware story if it doesn’t include a warning to use multi-factor authentication. But what is that? How do you use it?

It’s nothing more than another lock for your digital doors!

Digital Security Measures

  • Your login name and password makes up one key to your account.

  • Your phone, face, fingerprint or a physical key make up a second key.

  • Some phones use a fingerprint or facial recognition which can be configured on your device.

  • You can use a free authenticator app - Google Authenticator, Duo Security and Microsoft Authenticator are a couple of popular options.

  • There are also physical keys - like YubiKey - that plug into your computer

What makes it safer?

Think of your account login name as “who you are” and your password as “what you know”. That’s good security, but since logins and passwords are hacked, having an extra measure of security makes for better security.

This extra factor is “what you have” -your phone, fingerprint, face, or physical key. It’s not easy for a hacker to get one of these in addition to the login and password.

Try it on Facebook - Click your profile picture in the top right corner and select Settings & Privacy > Settings. Click Security and login. Scroll down to Two-Factor Authentication and click Edit. Select how you want to authenticate - try something easy at first like Text Message.

Once you’ve started using Text Message, you can get more advanced later with an authenticator app. If you have questions, I’m just an email away.

🎆 Did You Know? One place I’ve always wanted to see is Petra, also known as The Lost City, in Jordan. I grew up reading British mysteries, and when a character had spoken of touristing in Petra, I thought it was a fictional place.

One recently discovered fact about a Petra monument called the Treasury, is that it’s actually a mausoleum, and 12 human skeletons have been discovered there. One thing is for sure, if I ever do go to Petra, you won’t hear about my vacation until I’m back!
